The room was extremely comfortable and spacious. The beds were comfy, the bathroom was clean and the whole experience of staying at a Ryokan was fantastic. The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English. The food was great too! We booked a room with half-board and it was a very interesting experience to eat a traditional Japanese breakfast (on our second day they provided more western options as the difference in culinary was difficult to us, but I was glad I got to have the experience.) The dinner was superb, I am pretty the best food I ate in Japan. We booked the private onsen which was very interesting, clean and beautiful. We didn't try the public onsen as we were uncertain of how to behave in one, so it was great to use the private one. It was only 1000 yen per couple and the staff explained how to use the space really well. It was an excellent stay, I really felt that I managed to experience a more traditional side of Japana. Also, the hotel was only a short walk from the touristic spots. It was at the end of a hill, but not difficult at all to reach. And the hotel provides a pick up service from the train station.

This ryokan is located on a hillside above the historic district, and our room had a beautiful view out over Takayama. The staff were friendly and helpful (most spoke English). Although we had a wooden bathtub in our room, we used the public baths and also reserved the private outdoor bath once. All of the bathing facilities were spacious and clean. We ate dinner and breakfast one time each during our stay - the coursed dinner included local ingredients like hida beef and the grilled miso at breakfast was delicious. It's a great location for people who are willing to walk up a hill to get to/from town and the hotel. There are hiking paths just a few minutes' walk further up the hill (that connect to the Higashiyama walking course), and it's a short (but steep) walk to Takayama's historic district, the morning markets, Takayama Jinya, etc.

We came here for the ryokan experience. We were not disappointed. For people in our 60s, the steps and stairs were the only major challenge, not to mention getting up and down off a futon on the floor! But this is part of the reason for going. The evening meal was extremely beautifully presented and also delicious. Breakfast was in the same vein. We paid 1,000 yen extra to use the private onsen, and it was worth it. We were helpfully supplied with an English set of instructions on correct etiquette for the bath. To arrange a pickup from the station uphill to the ryokan, the staff at the tourist center at the station were very helpful. It was easy to book the shuttle back down to downtown after our stay.

The personal service started as soon as we entered the door. Our suitcases had already been taken up to the room and one of the staff members showed us the room (which was more like a flat, let's be honest). The style was a traditional Japanese room, with stunning views overlooking the city from our "balconyroom". Breakfast was nice as well. They have a basic, but good onsite onsen for guests and provide kimonos for their guests. Highly recommend this place, even though it is a walk. PS. They offer free shuttle to the trainstation which is great, signup in reception.

A charming and dated ryokan yet affordable with an onsen. My room had a comfortable "balcony" with two chairs and a table, making the most comfortable traditional Japanese room I've stayed. The view over Takayama was great. The staff spoke sufficient English and the wifi worked fine. They serve good Japanese breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30. The Japanese dinner they offer is excellent, though somewhat expensive at 6050 yen. Private onsen for 40 minutes costs 1000 yen. Would definitely come again.
